Minllyn Slate Mines.
5th March 2010.Minllyn Slate Mine,Dinas Mawddwy ,Mid Wales
This was one of my first adventures, well recorded any way,and the first time I went into a mine.Managed to take some pictures although I had never done anything like this before,my good friend Ian Addams showed me the ropes and safety procedures to follow when under ground and how to take a good picture or two under ground. The mine was excellent and got me hooked on this sort of thing. We have been back to Minllyn a few times now and on our last visit that will pop up later on yo will see the difference in the picture quality ,and also we found different areas to explore in this old mine,so I have attached a picture to this write up and will add a few more shots of the mine....

This is not the entrance to the main mine that we are at this is a trial.
The Roman Mines,Llanymynech,Powys 31st March 2010
Another trip lined up on a very cold morning but hey we will be under ground any way, took some finding this one as we had been given very brief details as to it where a bouts, although when we did find it it was in the easiest place to find.Any way in we went and very old this is there is said to be burial areas in the mine,so we were careful as to where we went in the mine a lot of back fill has calcified into solid heaps and some of the formations are very nice to look at.What little information I can find about this mine is that it was a copper mine and it sits just under the Llanymynech Rocks which is a lime stone quarry.

Hafren Forest walk and a peep at The Nant yr Eria Lead mine
Checking out the route.
Hafren Forest walk and a look at the Nant yr Eria Lead Mine 4th April 2010.
It was a very cold day so we took a drive down to Mid Wales and to The Hafren Forest on arriving we looked at the information board in the car park which was very informative and discovered that there were mines in the area. One in-particular mine was The Nant yr Eria Lead Mine, originally it was a Bronze Age Mine and was cracked open again in the early 19th century and around about 33 tons of lead was extracted from the mine, also at the site of the mine old bronze age tools were found thus giving massive clues as to the age of the mines

A Denbigh Bike ride 6th June 2010
Well very rare you will see me on a bike although I did enjoy it at the time, and I didn`t go to far from home. The thing is living in Wales there is no easy way to get round, you will have to go up a hill at some stage, but flying down the other side is brilliant. So a little trip out just to see what I could see and take pictures of.Our house is very close to the old Mental hospital that has been the subject of many ghost hunting programs and I took a few pictures of it for you to see and pictures of other things.

We make our way up The Old Miners Track.
Snowdonia Copper Mines 20th June 2010.
After purchasing a book The Copper Mines of Snowdonia I mention it to Ian and of coarse he knew all about them,so our next trip was arranged. This time Daniel one of my sons wanted to come with us to explore. We set off of bit late in the morning to start our walk at the old miners track that takes you Mount Snowdons summit, but not today we were looking for the mines en route. After arriving a bit late the car park was full and we had to park a good 2 miles down the road adding this to our walk,it wasn't to bad but it was a killer coming back after being all over the mountain side seeking out and exploring the old copper mines

Dylife Lead Mines Mid Wales.
Dylife Lead Mines,Staylittle,MidWales 30th June 2010.
Well back to the mines and adventure and over to Staylittle this is on the mountain road over from Llranbrymair to Llannidloes and is said to have been one of the biggest lead mines in Europe and being host to one of the largest water wheels made from wood. Some of the the depths of this mine mine are said to be nearly 800/900 feet and much of it is flooded now although some levels are still accessible. This was a good day and was very interesting how it was all laid out .there used to be a lot of buildings up there to do with the mines and the village as well housing up to 1000 people. But if you go up there now there is nothing left but the old church really you cant tell there was anything there as regards to buildings. The levels of the mines are extensive. We chose a day when water levels were low to allow access and we entered a few of the levels to explore.....

Time for our annual summer holiday and this year we are giving camping a go,cars packed up and off we go down into Powys and a little quiet camp site called Cwn Ddu.near to Brecon. The holiday was fine apart from it being a little wet sometimes, but that can not be helped all part of the fun so I will put some pictures on of just some of the places we visited.

A ride out to New Quay, for Fish and Chips.
From our base camp we set out in search of supper, and what better to get when near the coast "fish and chips" I have never been to this part of Wales so had no idea what it was going to be like.New Quay, up-to the early 19th century only had a few thatched roof cottages, but as the century progressed boat building and fishing became a major industry for the area, bringing in workers and their families. What you see in the picture is just a small part of the little fishing town of New Quay.Sometimes whilst in New Quay you can catch a glimpse of Bottle nosed Dolphins, unfortunately we did not see ant that day,and lastly a little fact that we found out the writer Dylan Thomas lived in New Quay from 1944 to 1945.
A day trip out from camp to Dan-Yr-Ogof, Show caves.
On the way back we called at Porth-Yr-Ogof.(A quick visit).
The end of our Summer Holiday August 2010.....

Klondyke Mines,back home,Phone call,Lets go !!!!
Ian sets up for the picture of the adit.
Klondyke mines Trefiw,4th September 2010.
Ring ring.....me."yes" ..."its me Ian fancy going to a lead mine?".....me....."I am waiting at my front door when you picking me up?".
Off we go to Klondyke Lead Mines in Trefiw,North Wales...sort of between Conway and Llanwrst, this is a mine on many levels that runs right up the mountain side although I do say many levels a lot of the adits are trials. But it was mined all the way up and processed at the buildings that sit derelict at the bottom of the valley.Again,a lot of work has took place here and there was no modern machinery to make the job easy and most of the work underground was by candle light.Looking back at this you can tell who was taking the pictures.

Finding Bala Cave 20th March 2011.
Daft as it sounds Ian and myself had heard people talking about this cave and looked on the maps (in the wrong place) and were puzzled as to its where abouts. And thought nothing more about it until I picked up on a simple little walk including the cave,we did the walk and there it was,and even pass it daily in my van. This was a small trip so we had time to explore else where...........

Castell Carn Dochan Gold Mine.
The things we do !
Castell Carn Dochan Gold Mine 20th March 2011.
........After we had visited Bala Cave we decided to go a little further down the road to have a look at this little mine. I come across this one looking over the Os maps its on the Bala to Dolgellau road, just on the outskirts of Llanuwchllyn, thats a hard one to pronounce. It is a very old gold mine and took some finding as the banking around the entrance has slipped and covered it.It sits right under the old Castle,Carn Dochan, although there is not much left of this one.Not a lot of history on the castle,a bit of a mystery why it was built there as it had no strategic advantage to any one,it isn`t even in a good viewing point. There is a lot of quartz in the are and is strewn all the place in rocks. The Gold that was mined from here was of the highest quality and alas there isnt any trace of gold there any more.Of all the gold mines in the North Wales area I think this one was the 4th most productive.so any way thats enough bits and bats lets have a look inside.

Me looking over to Coed y Brenin.
Rhobell Fawr walk 27th March 2011.
Well I just scanning over the OS map and this caught my attention,an extinct volcano and in Wales,we just had to go and have a look. This was a great walk although a little steep on the last bit up to the trig point,it was just a long stretch getting up there took it out of us a bit but WOW! when you are at the top it is fantastic the height of this is 734 metres (2408 feet) and sits nicely in the Arenigs (Snowdonia National Park). There numerous ways and paths to get up to the top of Rhobell Fawr and we found out afterwards we had taken one of the hardest routes up ...typical ! but again well worth it on a good clear day.

Cae'r Defaid slate mine this has got some great picture and more information. This mine was marked for a return trip to explore the inside,a weekend trip for Ian and myself, me thinks.

Cae`r Defaid Slate Mine Adventure April 4th 2011.
As I said the mine was marked down for a return visit by Ian and my self to explore the inside of this little slate mine and take a few pictures to show you the inside of the mine. The mine was operational in the late 19th century running in to the early 20th century .another name for this mine is The Rhobell Quarry or Ty Ucha Quarry.Th top section of the mine was the first to be operational but it did not make any profit but the lower part, which we are not sure that we found was owned by the Caernarfoshire Company Of Slat Masons and this did make a profit as a slate slab mine

A nice day was forecast again and Donna had found this walk so we decided to do it,in the car, drive, park ,walk. The walk was very interesting in the fact that it had a slate mine en route,a very old mine by the look as it was in a bad state and all the adits I could find had collapsed and seemed very brittle inside ,if that's the right word to use.So we took in all the history of the hillside with terrific views and a trig point as a bonus

The Old Precipice Walk,Dolgellau.
The Old Precipice walk 16th April 2011.
This looked like an interesting walk to do as it was used by the old miners in that area and it has fanastic views of the Mawddach Estuary and the mountain ranges of Snowdonia,Snowdon and Moelwyn are to the north if you have a compass. The path has been renovated a little and is a tribute to all the hard work that took place on those mountain sides

The old adit nearly covered by nature.
Cwm Prysor Gold Mines 17th April 2011.
This was an odd one just sits to the side of the Old Cwm Prysor railway line between Bala Ffestiniog and and what we could find out about it, that it was an old gold mine.Once in,it was obvious this was an old mine and the water was deep as well,

Cwm Prysor Railway walk.
The Old Cwm Prysor Railway walk 30th April 2011.
This sort of thing gets my interest and attention We had seen this whilst driving to another walk previously and it is a good 4 to 5 miles I think and is a nice flat walk.If its really quiet and you can use your imagination you can almost hear the old train thundering through.I bet it would have been great to see .The track run for 25 miles and its construction took 10 years to complete.also the service ran for about 80 years from completion.

Llyn Helyd Lake Walk.
We emerge from the trees to this view.
Llyn Helyd Lake Walk,Trelawnyd,North Wales 5th May 2011.
We decided to do a walk locally so we went in search of this little gem of a lake, just outside Trelawnyd. We found it hidden away in the trees and not visible from the main road at all. This is a man made lake and at it deepest point is about waist depth. The lake was purpose built in the Second world war I think or it could a have been the First for the testing of amphibious vehicles like beech landing crafts and things like that.A big concrete ramp at one side of the lake is still there, that is what the vehicles used to drive off and in to the water. Now though it so peaceful I was shocked by the quietness of the place and it is teeming with wild birds and wild flowers.I t was all very interesting and well worth the trip out.

Aran Fawddwy.
We attempt Aran Fawddwy 15th May 2011.
A sort of rainy day forecast but we will give it a crack anyway ! Aran Fawddwy is the 16th highest summit in Wales at a whopping 2969 feet. The day started well but as we were on our way up the weather started to change for the worse and we had to abandon the walk.So this mountain will have to wait to be done again by the crew

Hide and seek anyone ?
Caerwys,North Wales walk about 5th June 2011.
lets keep it local today, this little place is only about 5/6 miles away from us and is on the Denbigh to Mold road. Lovelly little place for a nice and peaceful walk it actually crosses the Golf Coarse but dont worry the paths are well marked and instructions on how to get across the course are on the foot path signs. The walk takes you through fields and woodland so you see a little bit of everything....very nice.

The Ghost Village that is Rhosydd.
Rhosydd Slate Mine Trip 26th June 2011.
We hit the mines again one thing there is plenty of in North Wales is slate mines.Recorded history of Rhosydd put the actual quarry part of the workings being started back in the 1830`s,then by the 1850`s the workings had gone under ground with long adits and numerous chambers. Then it was and had the biggest slate underground workings in Wales with a staggering 170 chambers, and producing some 5616 tons of finished slate. The mighty Rhosydd came to an end in the1930`s

Cwmorthan Slate Mine .
A nice dry adit .
Cwmorthan Slate Mine and a group of others 10th July 2011.
A group of people had asked Ian to organise a bit of a trip to this Massive slate mine, how could Ian refuse.so I tagged along as well.
What follows is a quote from Ian Addams.....
"As I approached the opening I was overcome with a tingling sensation which filled my body with bated anticipation. My eyes drew out of focus as the my entry into the underworld unfolded .... the opening quivered and pulsated, glistening in the moody light of the day - I was spellbound. Drawing all my strength into a final leap of faith - I plunged into the darkness whereupon I experienced the terrible emptiness of a world void of everything. As I came to my senses, reality began to check in to existence and in the dim corridor of light, I could just makeout a passageway leading me inwards and towards my inevitable adventure..

Our way in to the mine
A Return visit to Craig-y-Gribin slate Llangynog 7th August 2011.
After the recky we did last week we decided to return to the mine with the right equipment as any effort to get last week would have been far to risky. We arrived and got set up for the small decent into Craig-y-Gribin slate Mine in Llangynog. This was the first time I had done something like this and it was a bit scary but I soon got used to it and the adrenaline went back on to simmer. The biggest chamber that we entered through was in a bit of a bad way as a lot of the ceiling had come down, the slate seemed very brittle not a good quality slate, but there a were a few adits to explore the main run out adit has long been sealed off at day level,we think to allow the road to pass up the valley.By the end of the trip we had pretty much worked out the layout of the mine and the adits that had been blocked intentionally for safety.

Llandudno MG Owners Club Snowdon Charity Run 21st August 2011.
Being an MG owner and a member or Llandudno MG owners club this was their annual charity run,so we just had to get involved. How could you not and opportunity to do something for charity and to see so many MG`s in one place at one time and to see them all driving along the roads along the coast and through the Snowdonia National Park. The day ended up being a bit wet but it was still fun to do.The drive started from the Promenade Llandudno, and ended at Bodelwyddan Castle.

Off we go,nice day, roof down on the MG and flask in the boot. Cwm Idwal is an excellent example of Glaciation and is some times known as the hanging valley .It has a great draw to hikers and mountain climbers.Believe it or not in 2005 a poll conducted by the Radio Time put Cwm Idwal as the 7th greatest natural wonder of the world. This place is also host to The Idwal Slabs,a great climb apparently

Deeside Quarry and Moel Fferna Walk.
On our way.
Deeside Quarry and Moel Ferna Walk 18th September 2011.
It was rainy,it was dull,it was breezy, but we just had to get out. We,Donna and myself have had our eye on this walk for a while now and just wanted to do it come rain or shine. So our friends Ian and Helen joined us and off we went. The start was a bit wet, well I say wet there was a massive down pour luckily our walk started off with some tree cover. But what a lovely walk this was ,so much so Donna and myself are going to go back on a nicer day to spend a bit of time up there it is so quiet up there in the quarry's.The inclines up to the quarry's is very predominant on the hillside as is the tram way and is very easy to follow. The top quarry,Moel Fferna is massive although to look at it yo would not guess that there is extensive workings below ground only accessible through the air shaft at the top with ropes and ladders. The whole circular walk is about 7 to 8 miles, but the next time we go up there we will just go to the quarry's,that being about 4 to 5 miles round trip.Notice boards guide you up the old tramway with lots of information as you go.So in a nut shell a great day and a fantastic little walk discovered.I think Black and White worked with this walk today.

Cnicht-The Welsh Matterhorn walk.
Cnicht walk October 2nd 2011.
Well Sunday comes and the morning unlike the week before which was scorching,is somewhat dull. But the walking conditions were fine.So off Ian,Helen,Donna and myself went to tackle the mighty Welsh Matterhorn that is Cnicht located in the Snowdonia National Park.Again this is another awesome area full of history, and the start of the walk gives you some incl-in as to the history of the place,a long drive up to the starting point that is Croesor and a few gates to get out and open and shut, yes gates to get to the village.Even Croesor is packed with history it being one of the main villages that housed the miners from Croesor Slate Mines and Rhosydd Slate Mines. The walk we did was a circular walk passing alsorts of things from massive spoil heaps, trial adits, some adits and views that would make you stop in time. The weather was kind to us for the first hour and a half or so giving us some spectacular views and we managed to get to to the summit of Cnicht, but the weather changed rapidly to very cloudy, wet and very low visibility conditions so our walk was cut a little short and we had to get down to a safe level to be able to navigate our selves back safely. As always we consider our selves to be fairly experienced walkers and we were equipped well with all the right equipment and knowledge to get back to our starting point. It was a shame it was cut a little short but this area does justify a return visit on a clearer day.We will return "Cnicht" !

Moelwyn,A Zinc and Manganese Mine.
Is it raining Ian ?
Moelwyn Zinc and Manganese mine 8th October 2011.
Well off on an adventure again, are Ian and myself of to the Village of slate and rain that is Blaenau Ffestiniog, and a mine that is on the backside of all the slate mines..Moelwyn Mine.
Quite a big mine in its day,I think it was mined from the late 1800`s to the early 1900`s.It was mined for Manganese and Zinc and has levels running from nearly the lake edge right up to the top of Moelwyn. If you manage to get to the top of these workings you can see a very good example of how they used to mine hills of this size and due to lack of all the modern equipment that we have now,how they got the ore down via the different levels using ore chutes between the levels. Also part of the old tramway is still intact for all to see.I have put some pictures up although the day was rainy and we had a lot of spotty pictures but we did get some pictures just to show off this fine example of old mine workings.

Coed y Brenin walk.
Coed y Brenin walk and we saw an Old Gold Mine" Gwynfynydd" 16th October 2011.
Wanted to go to this area for some time and Coed y Brenin in Welsh means "Kings Wood".There are lots of walks, lots to do and lots of places to stay apparently, and there's a Gold mine to look at as well, that once was open to the public and they could go into the mine and see how it was worked inside, but alas it had to close due to health and safety issues. It is a great area for mountain bikers as there are purpose built tracks running through the woods. The visitor Centre was opened in 2006 and is a great central point to all the activities.

Betws Y Coed Walk.
A Walk around Betws Y Coed 22nd October 2011.
Well the day was nice indeed for October,so the thought was to have a nice walk and not venture out to far from home, being Denbigh. So cameras at the ready and in to the car and off we went.We started at Sappers Bridge, something Donna had heard and read about, and I knew nothing about,we had to find it,and find it we did,the sun was quite low and was making the bridge stand out against the blue skies and autumn colours,I do like these quirky little bits of engineering. From the bridge we walked a small distance to a very small church called St Michaels Old Church, this is said to be the oldest building in Betws Y Coed and in the graveyard there are some magnificient Yew trees that are said to be over 1000 years old.Inside the church there is an even bigger treat as loads of history is explained I dont want to say to much as this church is well worth a visit if you like history.just a short stroll from the church is the railway station which we passed through and into the area where there are lots of little craft shops, home baked cake shops, welsh ice creams and a few clothes shops to hoot,we got a bit of lunch and walked to the little bridge at the end of Betws High Street to pick up the river walk to find the Miners Bridge, the path took us sraight to it,it was brilliant, the water falls were running well and the kayakers were making full use of the situation. From this point it was back up onto the main road and back into Betws and home,I know it doesnt sound like we did much but we have been here many times before and never really stopped long enough to really look at what this little town has offer in the way of History, country side walks,Welsh produce,Welsh Arts and Crafts I could go on ....all in all we had a fantastic day...marks 10/10

Minllyn Slate Mine Revisited.
A Return Visit To Minllyn Slate Mines 29th October 2011.
We have heard more stories and information that made us want to go back,so it was a bit of a nostalgic trip really just to go and see the old girl but this time she had,had some secrets revealed.A cave/mine explorer who lives in the area had been in and managed to open up new levels. The size of Minllyn now is pretty impressive and we still did not manage to go in all the levels. This time we managed to get a bit higher in the mine and get a better view of the chambers,we may have missed these last time on our visit.this time there seemed a lot more to see.Although one thing had not changed....the walk up to the mine was still as steep and tiring.

Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfalls,Powys.
Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfalls Walk 30th October 2011.
Well another nice Autumn day,and the great outdoors beckons us again. So off over, from Denbigh to Powys we go,and the Pistyll Rhaeadr Waterfalls and a walk included, taking in the Trig point on top of Cadair Berwyn and passing the small lake,Llyn Lluncaws. The Falls were running just right to give effect. There is a small walk from the littleCafe that sits at the bottom of the Falls if you do not feel like doing anything strenuous and you can get a good view of the fall regardless of what walk you do.

Bala Lake,Llyn Tegid.
A Walk high above Bala Lake 6th Novenber 2011.
Sunday,Sunday well we said we were going to rest this weekend but got up this morning and the sun was ripping the clouds apart to shine on the hills of North Wales so we had a discussion,a cup of coffee,a bacon buttie,a chat,a disagreement and then a big smile off each of us and off we went to Bala.We have been to Bala many many times before but never up on the South West side of the Llyn Tegid, which is reasonably high up to give some awesome views of the lake and Bala.It was a fairly clear day so we had some good views. The walk its self was not to strenuous and is a steady walk up to the high ground, once up there, there are al sorts of footpaths and bridal ways shooting off in all directions, something for next time maybe. All in all we were both glad we made the decision to go out for a walk and very happy we went where we did.

Cadair Idris Walk.
Shelter at the top.
Cadair Idris Walk 13th November 2011.
Donna has wanted to do this walk for quite some time we were just waiting for a good enough day to get some good views, and the forecast was good for this Sunday just gone.So the texts were sent to our other partners in crime Ian and Helen,a cup of tea was had and arrangements made, off we went
The day was a bit hazy but the cloud was moving at a vast rate of knots, due to the wind which was very strong at the top,put it this way we all did not have any cob webs left on us after this walk.We took the Minffordd Path,it starts on the southern side of the mountain, very close to the Tal y Llyn Lake made by on e of the many Glacial scars. This route was very nice and pleasant going,it took us past Llyn Cau and then up the massive rock wall that is Craig Cau and then onwards onto Penygadir, the summit of Cadair Idris. The path it self is fairly well marked as long as you keep your wits about you you will fine and it is well worth the trek right to the top and the cairn. If you feel like a little rest when you get to the top there is a little stone shelter with benches in to sit on....very cosy.So any way I`ve put some pictures on of our little trip to show you what its like..enjoy.

Mount Snowdon walk.
Mount Snowdon walk,At Last ! 27th December 2011.
Well Donna and myself have been considering walking this mighty Welsh diamond for some time now,and we thought what the heck the weather forecast was as good as it is going to get for this time of year and considering this time last year we were all nearly snowed in !..lets do it.We went up the Pyg track way and came down the Old miners track along side the lakes. The top unfortunately was very misty and visibility was down to about 30 foot or so and it was flipping cold, and the Cafe was shut ! it was ok tho we had some provisions with us,the hardest bit was getting some shelter out of the wind.We hit the trig point and the job was done, promising our selves that a return visit was well justified next year when conditions are a lot clearer and we can take full advantage of Snowdons mighty hight being 1085 metres or the old fashioned way 3560ft WOW!!!
